A nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women exposed to abuse through community-based support groups and training workshops to introduce knowledge/skills and change people's perceptions towards women and domestic abuse. The Young Girlfriends/Boyfriends Program focuses on teaching adolescents skills in leadership, communication, cultural appreciation, and how to address abuse issues, body image, sexuality, HIV/AIDS, and education.

Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation

This action-research center focuses on treatment, training, and prevention of HIV and HIV-related diseases (including tuberculosis) in the most vulnerable communities, at the community level. They offer special services for youth, and a Tutu Tester Mobile Unit, making HIV testing more accessible by literally driving into areas of highest need.

Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS

GAPA is a support system for elderly women who face HIV/AIDS and poverty themselves, or have lost their children or grandchildren to AIDS, requiring them to fulfill new social roles in their communities. GAPA provides educational workshops, one-on-one and group support , income generation projects, and afterschool care for children at their community center in Khayelitsha.

Sonke Gender Justice

A nonprofit organization which primarily supports men & boys by strengthening government, civil society, and citizen capacity to actively promote gender equality, prevent violence against women, and limit the spread and impact of HIV/AIDS. Sonke is unique in recognizing that improving gender relations will certainly require contributions, behavior changes, and leadership in men as well as empowering women.

Grassroot Soccer

Working to educate, inspire, and mobilize communities to stop the spread of HIV through soccer. Coaches, who are local community leaders, provide mentorship and life skills training to youth. Grassroot Soccer has graduated over 500,000 youth from their programs, and aspire to reach 1 million by the 2014 World Cup.
